1023H:
R/C is going to try rolling the starts today to try to get

previous days have not been successful. There will be a
single weather mark today, also.
1220H:
Course for Race 9: Course 4 (4 legs), weather mark at 1.2
nm, bearing 205 degrees.
1014H: Sounds like they are beginning to set up at

be "on time".
0955H:
Wind report just now: 210 degrees at 5 knots
0948H:
We have a rising tide this morning. Wind readings are 125 at

very many places are "locked in" at this point.
0916H:
Today is Industry Partners Day. Our intent is to have 2
races (no. 9 and 10). The breeze is around 10 right now,
with a forecast of 10 to 15.
0914H:
Gordon Ettie's Lochmaddy has been the Signal Boat for
Division 2...Gordon and his wife Alice (along with Alice's
daughter Avery) have been gracious hosts to the 8 to 12
workers who invade their space around 8 every morning.
Gordon is truly a sailor and raced Lightnings and Etchells,
but he is also an expert in his new role with this Grand
Banks.
The division had tent duty last night...it was Lewmar Day.
The trophies were silver picture frames engraved with class
and place, graduated in size for 1st 2nd and 3rd. First
place also was presented with a Lewmar winch handle...not so
pretty but very useful!
0912H:
Mark boats this week are Alligator Boots, Grace Meredith,
and Sarah from Biscayne Bay Yacht Club and the Low Down from
Coral Reef Yacht Club. The crews on these boats are experts
at what they do and swing this course at a moment's notice.
0910H:
The info I've been passing on to you has been broadcast on a
private channel from the mark boats working on Division 2.
The crews on these boats keep careful watch on the changing
conditions on the race course and still are able to feed
info back to the Signal Boat...and me.
0909H:
It's Friday already...where does the time go? We are heading
out to the race course. It is sunny and warm here (75
degrees) and a bit humid. We passed the cruise ship Crystal
Symphony at its dock but there were very few watching the
procession this morning.

J/80 fleet started at 1055. Five boats were called back:
Rascal, Little Feat, Jammy Dodger, Kicks, and Lifted. All

1055H:
Melges 24 fleet at the weather mark: Blu Moon then UKA UKA
Racing, then WTF
1047H:
The J/105's went off at 1045 with a clear start. Creative
Destruction tacked onto port shortly after the start. Most
of the fleet was lined up at the start so it's hard to say
who "won" the start. Savasana had clear air, starting near
the Signal Boat.
1038H:
Melges 24 fleet started at 1035, with Monsoon and Team
Windhover called OCS. Both boats restarted.
1027H:

1020H:
Course for today has been posted. All classes will sail
Course 4 (4 legs), with a single weather mark out 1.4 nm,
and a bearing of 165
1010H:
Lat/Long for the Signal Boat this morning is 24 31.448 N and
81 47.250 W
1000H:
Race Week News interviews in this morning's paper quotes
several skippers that tactics have been critical in the
races so far this week.
0941H:
You folks tracking the Melges 24 fleet need to know that we
have 2 boats named Zig Zag on the course, though one is Zig
Zag 18. Zig Zag is USA 625 on the printed scratch sheet and
is owned by Marty Jensen. Zig Zag 18 is owned by Henri
Samuel. I'll try to keep them straight for you when
reporting roundings.
0936H:
We have a rising tide this morning, until around noon.
0933H:
Ran into Skip Dieball in the tent. He's the US Sailing 2009
Champion of Champions. He's not out here racing, but is
coaching the J/105 team on Lucky Dog. Whenever you talk to
the coaches in the tent, with all that partying going on,
you get to the topic of the series aspect of KWRW and the
need to keep the crew focused on the racing as well as the
partying.
0931H:
It's pretty lumpy now that we are out to the racing area.
Early reports of wind direction have come in...155...but no
reported velocity at this time. I'd say it's a steady 13-16
right now. The weatherman says it will ease as the day
progresses.
A noisy crowd in the tent last night...having a good time.
Mount Gay had a prize drawing for those who signed up...17
nice items. There was no retail sales of Mount Gay items
this year, but SLAM has everything anyone might need or
want.
Just got a
wind reading of 162 and 13 knots
0913H:
In the J/105 class Savasana leads with 14 points, Ghost is
second with 26 points, Blackhawk holds third with 31 points,
Eclipse in fourth with 32 points, and Max Power is fifth
with 33 points.

second is Le Tigre with 25 points, third is Rascal with 27
points, fourth is Relentless with 28 points, and fifth is
Lifted with 32 points.
0910H:
An update on standings in the Melges 24 class has UKA UKA
RACING in first place with 9 points, Blu Moon in second with
11 points, WTF third with 12 points, Hoodlum Racing fourth
with 28 points, and Monsoon fifth with 30 points.
0908H:
Good morning. As we head out to the race course we are
noting that it is quite a bit warmer today and humid. The
good news is that the wind is blowing in the 15 knot
range...that should make some of our racers happy! Once
again our plan is to have 2 races today.
The Silver Shadow cruise ship is tied up, with its
passengers watching the parade of boats heading out. Another
cruise ship is coming in, and our sailors have been told to
avoid it. |

between 8 and 10 knots.
0948H:
Today is officially Mount Gay Rum Day...but to most of us
here every day is Mount Gay day as we enjoy the camaraderie
in the tent each night as daily awards are announced. An
added attraction today will probably be a booth set up to
sell wearing apparel and other items with the Mount Gay
logo. You won't find any Mount Gay hats there,
though...those are reserved for participants in the regatta.
0933H:
Div 2 signal boat is anchoring now, hoping to avoid the
"cable to Cuba" we snagged yesterday, requiring a diver to
set us free at the end of the day. The coordinates are 24
31.108N and 81 47.858W. We plan to be "on time" for the
first warning signal at 1030.
0923H:
We ran into a young sailor from "back home" last night in
the tent...Steve Frazier. He grew up sailing out of North
Cape Yacht Club in Michigan, then went on to the University
of Rhode Island sailing team, and is now an alum working in
the sailing industry. He's aboard Rascal, leading the J/80
fleet as of today. It's great to see the people you knew as
junior sailors continuing to participate.
0902H:
Word from the starting area is that the wind direction is
between 060 and 070 at 10 knots.
0852H:
It's Wednesday and another sunny day here in Key West. It's
a little cool this morning but the temperature is supposed
to climb to the mid-70's this afternoon. Breeze is forecast
for 5 - 10 again today.
In the Melges 24 fleet we have a tie for first place between
UKA UKA Racing and WTF, both with 10 points. The tie breaker
puts UKA UKA in 1st. Blu Moon holds third place with 16
points, Hoodlum Racing is fourth with 21 points, and Monsoon
and Baghdad are tied for fifth with 31 points. We'll see if
today's racing reduces the number of ties in this class
In the J/105 fleet Savasana holds first with 9 points,
followed by Ghost with 15, then Big Booty with 17. Eclipse,
Solaris, Blackhawk, and Max Power all have 24 points.
