1045H:
Now they are sailing so the port line boat dropped the
anchor line. Port line boat is going to use the gate boat
anchor for now until we can get them another anchor.
That put Bella Mente behind at least 6 minutes.
Still under AP
1041H:
Bella Mente just called in and said they are free from the
anchor line, but from here they look still hooked.
Bella Mente just reported that they are still hooked. They
are asking the port line boat to completely release the

mess!!!
We have an extra anchor on the Signal Boat that we will
transfer over to the port line boat.
1038H:

The Division 1 Signal Boat is heading in (finally)! Our
division did not get the wind that the other divisions got
today. Tomorrow is promising a better breeze - in the 15-20
range is predicted. Keep your fingers crossed. It would be
something to see Highland Fling, the Wally 82 going downwind
in that kind of air.
A summary
of the day for PRO Kenny Legler - the first race today
looked like a lake race, race 6 was more typical of Key West
with steady winds and perfect weather. We saw a few protest
flags in the Melges 32s only. No flags in any of the other
classes. So far this week, B flags seen on the water have
not ended up in the room.
1513H:
The first Melges 32 is Samba Pa Ti, with quite a nice lead

IRC1 division overall.
1439H:
Highland Fling just crossed the finish line for Race 6
1421H:
We are at the top of the course setting up for a windward
finish.
1419H:
Course change for the last beat - to 080. All IRC 1 rounded
the windward mark and are heading down to the gate. The
rounding order is Fling, Bella Mente, Decision, Interlodge,

going left were slow out of the gate. We have hoisted the
anchor and heading to the top of the course for the finish.
1320H:
All clear for IRC2 start
1326H:
Farr 40 start - 3 boats started at the pin and got skunked.
Boats starting at the signal boat are doing pretty well -
Nanoq and Enfant Terrible got good starts. Nerone is
left-most, but just crossed a boat so he isn't last.
1307H:
We are starting with course #5 - 5 legs. 090 for 2.0 and 1.7
nm for windward leg. Breeze is about 10.
1302H:
Still in a holding pattern waiting for the wind to settle
down. I am sure the racers won't mind having a chance to eat
a peaceful lunch.
It's wonderful to hear all the different languages spoken by
the different crews.
1237H:
We are now in the lull between the old breeze and new
breeze. Top mark is seeing 100-120 at 5-6 kts and we still
seeing significantly left of that at 3-4 kts.

and we had to shove them off.

1209H:
Vincere, Joe Fly and Stuntje.
1208H:
Goombay smash is 2nd
1205H:
The rest of IRC1 is coming to the finish. Kenny has decided
to hold off before posting race 6 until the wind settles
down a bit. The wind direction has been all over the place.
Looking up the course Anema & Core had some problems -
looked like they hooked a crab pot. There spinnaker was
collapsed and they weren't moving at all. They are back on
track now and heading toward the finish. That had to hurt
bad!
Plenty is first over the line in the Farr 40 class with a
good lead
1150H:
Highland Fling is first over the line in IRC1
1140H:
Yasha is the first Melges 32 followed by Bronco and then
Flat Stanley. Ninkasi is next, ramrod, Leenabarca, and then
a big mess and lots of screaming. The last IRC 2 boat was
caught in the middle of the Melges rounding
Gold Digger brings up the rear of IRC 2

dropped to 4 kts.

heading to the gate. Neither boat has jibed coming down the
course. We are contemplating a course change to 070.
Confirmed that we are changing course to 070.
1105H:
The first 5 Farr 40s rounding weather mark are Enfant
Terrible, Barking Made, Plenty, Spaceman Spiff and Nanoq. It
looks like Enfant Terrible's bad start and left side didn't
hurt him too much.
1103H:
IRC 1 WW mark roundings Bella Mente Fling, Decision,
Interlodge, Anema & Core, Vlea veloce
1055H:
Celeritas, Arathusa and Argo were OCS in the Melges 32 class

1050H:
Melges 32 start coming up.
1048H:

competitors have checked in. We anticipate the first signal
at 1030.
0859H:
At 0900, the wind is 7-8 kts from around 060. Seas are a
foot or less.

January 18, 2010 -
Nautica Watches Day -
1448H: We are done for the day. The results have
been sent to the scoring office and preliminary results will
be posted. A number of protests have been called in so these
results may not be complete. Check the protest board for
actual filings. Final results will be posted after the
hearings. I will post more photos this evening. The
transmission from out on the course is very slow so it takes
a while to post the photos on Flickr. I also have a video
clip of the Melges 32 start for Race 1 that I will post.
Have a good evening and join us again tomorrow - Harbor
start is at 0900. Susan signing off.

Bella Mente is closer - less than a minute behind Fling. The
navigators on both boats are former Yale sailors. Peter
Isler on Fling and Robert Hopkins on Bella Mente.

Signal Boat that haven't had much time to send in blogs! (We
