Boatscape.com and Premiere Racing join North Sails Race Week

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Race Week producer Bruce Golison today announced two major developments for his 16-year-old sailing event: an added co-title sponsor and co-producer.

"Boatscape.com," an on-line marine products company, will share the title with long-time supporter North Sails.  The regatta's new name is "Boatscape.com/North Sails Race Week."

Also, Peter Craig and his company, Premiere Racing, Inc., will join the Golison & Golison company in staging the high-profile Southern California event the weekend of June 23-25, 2000.

Boatscape.com, a dynamic, new Internet boating destination Web site, joins North Sails, which has been affiliated with Race Week since 1988.

"We are excited to welcome Boatscape.com to our event," Golison said. "As an Internet company providing products and services to the boating community, they represent the future and will likely impact everyone in the marine industry.  As a progressive regatta, we are excited to have a leading-edge company play a prominent role."

Boatscape.com will have on-site computers to allow Race Week participants access to its Web site at www.boatscape.com.  Boatscape.com also is sponsoring GMC Yukon Yachting Key West Race Week and Block Island Race Week 2000.

"We look forward to playing an integral role in the world of sailing," said Shayne Stump, director of Marketing at Boatscape.com. "We are very pleased to be participating in the very best regattas on the U.S. racing calendar."

Peter Craig's company, Premiere Racing, Inc., manages GMC Yukon Yachting Key West Race Week, the most prestigious big boat regatta in the country today with an entry count in excess of 270 boats.

"The opportunity to bring Peter and his group in as co-managers of race week will be great for me and the event," Golison said.  "The additional resources will enable our regatta to continue growing, both in size and stature, while easing the enormous time commitment, which has come at the expense of my family.  Obviously, having a company with Premiere Racing's reputation for excellence participating in our regatta will add to the event's stature."

For Premiere Racing, the opportunity to co-manage one of the West Coast's most visible sailing events fits its plan to expand involvement in select events around the country.

Craig, who attended the 1999 Long Beach event, said, "The reputation that Bruce and his regatta have attained over the years is well deserved. Our philosophies on how to run regattas, both on the water and shoreside, are very similar.  We look forward to being a part of and contributing to this first-class event."

Gary Weisman, president of North Sails, welcomed the addition of Premiere Racing to Golison's regatta.

"North Sails is very pleased to hear that Peter Craig will be joining the regatta management team for Boatscape.com-North Sails Race Week," Weisman said.  "Premiere Racing brings with it all of the qualities that are appreciated by yacht owners and sponsors at other major events such as Key West and Block Island.  Pooling the resources of Golison & Golison and Premiere Racing at the West Coast's premier event is a combination that can't miss."

One of the obvious benefits will be the ability to grow the fleet while maintaining the quality racing that has been a trademark.  New one-design fleets expected to compete in the 2000 regatta are the Olson 30 (their national championships), J/105 (proposed Southern California Championship), Santana 20 and Etchells 22.  Those newcomers will join last year's one-design classes: Farr 40, J/120, Melges 24 and Schock 35.

PHRF racing has long been a mainstay at the Golison event.  Substantial efforts will be made to grow this segment of the fleet.  An emphasis on realigning the PHRF fleet to provide better racing for the heavy displacement boats also will be studied.

"The strength of our regatta over the years has been superb race management," Golison said.  "The major components of our three race committees -- Mark Townsend and his Alamitos Bay Yacht Club team, Mike Segerblom and the US SAILING Center and the Golison & Golison group -- will remain intact.

"Golison & Golison and Premiere Racing will provide competitors with some of the finest race management in the world.  This bodes well for Boatscape.com-North Sails Race Week competitors for years to come."

In addition to race management, Alamitos Bay Yacht Club provides launching facilities for the regatta.
