Will more records
fall at the 2003 North Sails Race Week?
For North Sails Race Week 2003, we are expecting even bigger things. After 19 years of running this regatta, our expectations have only continued to grow.
Regardless of where
you call home, we invite you to bring your team west, south, north or east to
Long Beach, California. The racing at
North Sails Race Week is some of the best in the world, with warm weather,
great breeze and world class race management setting the tone. Regardless of whether you campaign a PHRF
boat or fight it out in a one design fleet…be sure to mark your calendar for
June 27 – 29 with North Sails Race Week 2003!
PHRF Focus….
Last year with our PHRF entries topping 55 boats, competing in five classes, the competition was fierce. Tight racing in “like boat” classes has become a hallmark of our PHRF classes….with results measured in seconds, not minutes. With competitors coming from California and beyond, you will be racing against the best PHRF boats possible. With the marina, the shipyard for launching and the hotel headquarters all within walking distance, logistics for out of town boats have never been easier.
For our Class 1 big boat competitors, our Race Week rating consortium assigns the ratings so that the variables of bringing custom boats to this regatta can be assessed and accounted for, providing the best big boat racing anywhere. 2002 saw eight 50+ footers fighting it out on the race course, with races decided by good sailing rather than by great ratings.
Regardless of whether you are racing a heavy displacement “old boat”, a medium displacement production boat or a new state of the art racing machine, we have a PHRF class for you.
Jim Demetriades’ “Yassou” was the PHRF Boat of the Week at the 2002 regatta.
For one design fleets, North Sails Race Week is the opportunity to race against big fleets in a variety of conditions with the best crews possible. For a number of our classes, North Sails Race Week is the place to “showcase” their class to the sailing world. One design fleets committed to date:
* Farr 40’s - A 15+ boat class will create spectacular action and provides for a long list of sailing talent competing to win the Farr 40 Pacific Coast Championship. Out of state Farr 40’s competed for the first time at the 2002 regatta.
* J/105’s – For the very first time, the J/105 class will be holding its J/105 Pacific Coast Championships in Southern California and North Sails Race Week will host this championship. 35 to 40 J/105’s will be on the starting line. With the J/105 North Americans in San Francisco a month later, bring your J/105 to Long Beach and then to San Francisco for two of the best J/105 regattas anywhere in the country this year.
* J/120’s – Coming off of last year’s successful North American Championships held at NSRW, the J/120’s will have another strong showing.
* Schock 35’s – One of the original strong one design 35’ keel boat classes on the west coast, the Schock class will again have NSRW as their Pacific Coast Championships.
* Melges 24’s – As always, NSRW is a major regatta on the Melges 24 calendar.
* 1D35’s - The west coast is where the action is for 1D35 sailors and North Sails Race Week is the key regatta on the west coast. With the 1D35 Nationals in San Francisco, bring your 1D35 to Long Beach and then to San Francisco for two of the best 1D35 regattas anywhere in the country this year.
* Corsair 31’s – A strong 10 boat fleet is expected to hit the starting line in June.
* Other one design classes are invited to apply.
Tom Carruthers’ J/105 “Incorrigible” was the 2002 Boat of the Week.
