"Multihull racing has been an exciting part of Key West Race Week since 2002. Following a 1 year hiatus, there was a respectable turnout last year despite the brutal global recession. There are 2 multihull starts being offered in 2011 with Class 1 featuring the likes of the F25C, F31 and R-33. Class 2 will include the Corsair 28R, Sprint 750 and F-27 among other designs with similar speed potential. Unlike last year when South East regional handicaps were used, a new, independent multihull handicapping consortium led by the experienced and respected Trey Ritter will use a time on time formula. With our new expense savings and straightforward logistics initiatives, coupled with logical class breaks, we’re confident that Key West 2011 will see some terrific multihull racing."

Peter Craig, Race Chairman

“Thanks for a great event.”    Jon Colclasure, Corsair 28R Overdo owner, Colleyville TX

“Thanks for a great week of racing in Key West. As well, many thanks to (the race committee) for a stellar job on the division three circle. Look forward to seeing you again next year…”

Bill Titus, Summit 35 Act One, Newport, RI

Please be sure to check out the event logistics page for answers to your logistics questions.

Multihull sailors are encouraged to check out expense savings specifics on our Affordable Key West page.

Dockage: The Truman Waterfront Property, managed by Premiere Racing as a temporary marina during race week is a good option for dry sailing and trailer storage. Fees have been discounted 25% for 2011.

Marinas listed on the marinas page. Stock Island marinas are conveniently located for Division 3 racers.

Two campgrounds are available for those who bring their own motor homes or tents: Boyd’s and Leo’s. Boyd's has a total of 10 slips available. These have been popular with multihull sailors in the past.  ($75 fee / 7 week cancellation policy, 305-294-1465 info@boydscampground.com)

Staging-Mast In-Launch-Haul-Mast Out:  There are numerous options available in Key West and on Stock Island (see the Key West logistics page). A new event mobile marina operation (Coffin Marine) was in play at Truman Waterfront Property last year and received very favorable reviews from boat owners and boat captains. Their rates were 10% lower than what S&S Mobile Marina charged in 2009.

Trucking through the Keys: Please see the Key West logistics page for guidance on trucking restrictions.

We are asking the Key West Chamber of Commerce to lobby the Florida DOT to provide relief on trucking and escort restrictions. More to follow later this spring…   For details and questions: the Florida Department of Transportation numbers and links are on our logistics page.

2011 has the potential to be a breakthrough year for multihull racing in Key West.  Following the 2010 event last January we reached out to multihull sailors to assess what it would take to attract multihull sailors to Key West Race Week.  We learned a lot back in April and May and are confident that it will pay dividends.

Discussions with experienced handicappers Trey Ritter, Steve Green and Bruce Bingman have us well on the way to taking the important steps of fair handicapping for windward leeward racing using a Time on Distance to Time on Time conversion formula. The average handicap speed range of each class will be part of the conversion. The preliminary formula will be posted soon and the final formula will be posted on the event website prior to the end of December. We are confident that this will result in fair racing and deserving winners at the end of the 10-race series.

We hope to have the class handicap ranges posted on the event web site by early September.  The tailored multihull handicap application and safety rules will also be posted in September.  Entrants will need to submit any current handicap certificates for measurement verification.  Assigned handicaps may differ from local handicaps because the boats are being handicapped for short windward / leeward racing and the handicap will be relative to other entrants in your class.

We are offering two separate classes with rating bands that are more logical than what we offered last January.  Invited multihulls for Class 1 will include the F25C, F31, R-33 and other boat with similar or faster speed potential approved by Premiere Racing. Invited multihulls for Class 2 will include the Corsair 28R, Sprint 750, F-27 and other boats with similar speed potential. As you may know, the Corsair 28 R class has enjoyed many years of great one design racing in Key West over the years.

For any multihull design that ends up with 5 or more entrants, we will provide daily and series ‘sub class’ trophies in addition to the standard class awards.

Be sure to check out our expense savings section.  There are two convenient camp grounds: Boyd’s and Leo’s. Boyd's has some capability for mooring multihulls.  Stock Island marinas are better value for the multihulls and they closest to the Division 3 racecourse.  There is an early entry discount and access cards for the evening socials are significantly less than last year.

Be sure to check back to see the very latest on multihull racing next January in Key West.  We ask that any owner contemplating participant let us know whether you are planning, probable or possible. We’ll post this so others can see how the fleet is developing this fall. If you check out the J/80 and Farr 30 web pages you will see how effective this can be for building class size.

Your feedback is always welcome – call (781-639-9545) or email us anytime!

“Premiere Racing is in the business of putting on sailboat races, and, truth be told, they do it as well as or better than any other organization in the world…”

Sarasota Herald Tribune

“It truly is wonderful to be back here in Florida. We had lovely conditions today with the sun shining brightly and the wind blowing strong. That is why we all come here to go sailing in the winter. There aren’t many places in the world this nice at this time of the year.”

Colm Barrington, Ker 50 Magic Glove from Ireland

“I sensed no change in the atmosphere at the regatta other than it was widely known that boat registrations were down from prior years.  The parties were great and seemed to be more energized than last year.”

Bill Sweetser, J/109 Rush, Annapolis, MD

“This is one of the best big-boat regattas in the world. That's why we all keep coming back. We enjoy sailing here."

Russell Coutts, Farr 40 Mascalzone Latino tactician and America’s Cup Champion

“Thanks for a great week of sailing.  You guys did a fantastic job as always.”

Jeff Madrigali, former U.S. Olympian

“Acura Key West Race Week continues to be America’s best, most important regatta.”

Gary Jobson; America’s Cup Hall of Famer

“I think the venue is terrific and the organization is tremendous. This is one of the most proficiently organized regattas in the entire world,”

            Brad Butterworth, America’s Cup Champion

“It’s a mid winter break – everybody gets out of the cold, they get away from the snow and all things associated with winter for seven days in the middle of January…”

Terry Hutchinson, America’s Cup Tactician

“The attraction is it’s a nice place to be in the world in January.  Good weather, blue skies…the competition is great.”

Paul Cayard, America’s Cup/Volvo Race Skipper

“It’s fantastic to win in Key West. It’s always great conditions and superb racing.”

Andrew Fisher, Owner Swan 42 Bandit
