Year Founded: Many people believe Mount Gay Rum was produced in Barbados as early as 1663
but the first written evidence is dated 1703.
Did you know: Mount Gay Rum is believed to be the oldest rum in the world.
Legends have it that Mount Gay Rum became the sailors’ drink of choice in the eighteenth century because it proved their sailing skill. As Barbados was the most difficult island from which to return to the European mainland (because of the prevailing winds and ocean currents), sailors had to prove they had been there. A barrel of Mount Gay Rum was testament to that fact, and became the hallmark of superior sailors everywhere.
On Key West: Mount Gay Rum is synonymous with sailing and is the drink of choice for sailors worldwide. The brand has been a sponsor at Key West for 16 continuous years and this regatta is a key event on Mount Gay Rum’s sponsorship calendar.
