Campaigning one's boat - no matter how small - for a full week in the southernmost point in the United States is not an inexpensive proposition. However, the perception that one has to have a maxi-boat budget to enjoy one of the ultimate experiences in sailboat racing, is dispelled by the boat owners who have been sharing their ideas with us over the years. read more.... | A popular shoreside tradition - the Saucony-Foot Locker 5K Run. Three-person teams and individuals bring their competitive drive to dry land. Entry is free for all ‘card-carrying sailors’. The Sunday morning start means your crew can run off the pounds and avoid the wait for crew weigh-in by weighing in at the finish line immediately following the race. |

Dave Brennan (Principal Race Officer- Div 3) Reports from Auckland
October 15 (continued)
On the day we arrived the race committee had already left the dock so Kendra and I walked towards the beach to see if we could see any racing. The majority of the shops along the way were showing the Louis Vuitton races on live TV. As good fortune would have it we found a pub with a large screen TV and full of locals watching the races, all these people new the boats and all the players, they new who was quick and who wasn't and they all had their favorites and were rooting for them like it was a football game - what a great afternoon.
The next day we were out on the water with Peter Reggio on the Romeo circle. There are two circles Romeo and Juliet and the race committee of 250 people to run the races and manage the course. The race committee meets each morning for a meeting and go over the plans for the day it is quite and operation and Peter has done a great job with all the volunteers.
Once aboard the signal boat we discovered that Dottie Cheesborough is Peter Reggio's primary scribe, it was like old home week. I got to go now more later...

sorry for the quick stop on the last E mail. Dot and Kendra are having a great
time. Cheese is out on a mark boat and there are a number of other people from
the states on the Romeo course I haven't met yet. The starts are great being
on the signal boat you're in the middle of the action then after the boats are
away we go down below to watch the action live on a big screen TV. It
doesn't get any better than this.
The race boats are about 2 hours from the dock and the RC is about 3 hours from the dock, it's a good time for a nap. After the race committee is back at the dock it's a 1 hour car trip in rush hour traffic back to the via duct basin and the CORM (challenger of record management) office to check in with the jury.
Walking into the office was like a family reunion from all the regattas you have been to in the past, along with Charley cook as an umpire was Brad Dellenbaugh, Jim Capron US Sailing head of the judges committee, Pat Shehan from the NYYC regatta office, Dyer Jones from NYYC as the head of CORM and the list goes on. Kendra and I are in Queenstown for a week then back to Auckland for the second round robin.
It will be interesting to see what the boats look like after a week in the chop shop.
I'll keep in touch.
