The
ultimate prize at Key West is the Terra
Nova Trading Trophy, symbolic of the regatta's ‘Boat of the Week’. This
prestigious award will be presented to the boat which triumphs in the class with
the closest most competitive racing.
Eight
years ago an objective ‘dual criteria’ was established for winning this
beautiful mahogany-carbon fiber trophy. It became apparent that the previous
criteria - lowest score - wasn't always meaningful. More times than not there
was one boat that ran up straight bullets because that particular class wasn't
very competitive.
Over
the years we added factors and honed the formulas with the goal of achieving
parity among the various boat types and class sizes. We worked hard to make it
an quantitative, numbers driven award. Last year’s winner, George Andreadis’
Atalanti XI, was
determined based on this dual criteria.
Beginning
this year, we will institute a revised selection process for the Boat of the
Week – one that will retain portions of the objective quantitative criteria
used in past years and combine them with a new subjective qualitative component.
One
reason for the change is that we determined that one could not properly adjust
for class size, despite numerous attempts at tuning that component.
Additionally, there are factors and situations on the race course that
need to be considered - factors that that were not included in point spreads or
our time-distance formulas in past years.
Going forward, we will retain the quantitative criteria which takes the series score into account, subtracting the points of the class winner from the 5th place boat. The fewer the points between 1st and 5th the better the result.
This
year we will review corrected times and deltas among the top boats in handicap
classes and use this as part of the qualitative criteria. This assessment will
also be a factor in determining Boat of the Day. (Last year’s second criteria
used a time differential which added the corrected time - elapsed time for one
designs - between first and fifth place each day and divided this number by the
total miles raced. The lowest average time differential between first and fifth
place - in seconds/mile - was the best result.)
Qualitiative factors and criteria include varying conditions on the 4 courses, class size, different number of races, protest decisions, the effect of boats dropping out of races, starts, mark roundings and other situations not necessarily reflected in finish times or places. The Race Chairman will call upon his 4 Principal Race Officers, Race Management Consultant and Chief Judge to report their observations before determining the Boat of the Day and Boat of the Week winners. Each class is eligible for only one Boat of the Day Award during race week.
The Lewmar Marine Trophy - the PHRF Boat of the Week - will be awarded to the PHRF class with the closest competition. The time and distance formula will identify the leading contenders and a combination of qualitative and quantitative criteria identified above will be used to determine this winner.
No criteria is perfect - including ours. We'll continue to look at this issue and strive to develop the very best method for ensuring that the Terra Nova Trading Trophy is presented to the class winner which rriumphs in the most competitive, closely contested class during race week.
