The Yachting Trophy - Boat of the Week

The ultimate prize at Key West is the Yachting Trophy, symbolic of the regatta's "Boat of the Week." This prestigious award is presented to the yacht which triumphs in the class with the closest most competitive racing. The criteria for winning the beautiful mahogany-carbon fiber trophy has evolved somewhat over the past few years. The reasons for the seemingly complex criteria came about six years ago. It became apparent that the old criteria - lowest score - wasn't always meaningful. More times than not there was one boat that ran up straight bullets for one of two reasons: 1) that particular class wasn't very competitive or; 2) the winner was a PHRF boat with a rating that ultimately turned out to be more than generous.

Last year the Yachting Trophy winner, Robert Hughes’ Heartbreaker, was determined based on our dual criteria. The first was a time differential which added the corrected time (elapsed time in one design classes) between first and fifth place each day (in seconds) and divided this number by the total miles raced. The lowest average time differential between first and fifth place (in seconds/mile) is the best result. The second criteria took the series score into account, subtracting the points of the class winner from the 5th place boat. The fewer the points between 1st and 5th the better the result.

As you might expect, there's an inherent disadvantage for those classes with the most entries. The point differential between the fifth and first place finisher in a 50 boat class is routinely higher than a class with 7-10 entries, and the time differential is also effected. Therefore, in 2000, we weighted both criteria based on class size. The dual criteria and factors were adjusted slightly in 1999 and 2000, and we have continued our fine-tuning for 2001.

The criteria for Boat of the Day will once again use the first part of the dual formula outlined above, using time and distance from that day's racing. Each class is eligible for only one Boat of the Day Award during Race Week.

No criteria is perfect - including ours. We'll continue to look at this issue and strive to develop the very best method for ensuring that the Yachting Trophy is presented to the class winner which triumphs in the most competitive, closely contested class during Race Week.
