It should be exciting racing in all the fleets today. Not very many places are "locked in" at this point.

0916H: Today is Industry Partners Day. Our intent is to have 2 races (no. 9 and 10). The breeze is around 10 right now, with a forecast of 10 to 15.

0914H: Gordon Ettie's Lochmaddy has been the Signal Boat for Division 2...Gordon and his wife Alice (along with Alice's daughter Avery) have been gracious hosts to the 8 to 12 workers who invade their space around 8 every morning. Gordon is truly a sailor and raced Lightnings and Etchells, but he is also an expert in his new role with this Grand Banks.

The division had tent duty last night...it was Lewmar Day. The trophies were silver picture frames engraved with class and place, graduated in size for 1st 2nd and 3rd. First place also was presented with a Lewmar winch handle...not so pretty but very useful!

0912H: Mark boats this week are Alligator Boots, Grace Meredith, and Sarah from Biscayne Bay Yacht Club and the Low Down from Coral Reef Yacht Club. The crews on these boats are experts at what they do and swing this course at a moment's notice.

0910H: The info I've been passing on to you has been broadcast on a private channel from the mark boats working on Division 2. The crews on these boats keep careful watch on the changing conditions on the race course and still are able to feed info back to the Signal Boat...and me.

0909H: It's Friday already...where does the time go? We are heading out to the race course. It is sunny and warm here (75 degrees) and a bit humid. We passed the cruise ship Crystal Symphony at its dock but there were very few watching the procession this morning.

Last J/105 around is Absolutely.

Report from the weather mark is that Tenacious and Radiance are "shrimping" at the weather mark.

1059H: J/80 fleet started at 1055. Five boats were called back: Rascal, Little Feat, Jammy Dodger, Kicks, and Lifted. All boats cleared, with Lifted clearing last, about 2 minutes after the start. It looked like the fleet piled up down at the pin end.

Last Melges 24 around weather mark is USA 625 Zig Zag.

1055H: Melges 24 fleet at the weather mark: Blu Moon then UKA UKA Racing, then WTF

1047H: The J/105's went off at 1045 with a clear start. Creative Destruction tacked onto port shortly after the start. Most of the fleet was lined up at the start so it's hard to say who "won" the start. Savasana had clear air, starting near the Signal Boat.

1038H: Melges 24 fleet started at 1035, with Monsoon and Team Windhover called OCS. Both boats restarted.

1027H: All boats have checked in and are ready to race. We are inside 5 minutes to the Warning signal for the Melges 24 class. Starts will be gapped by 5 minutes to separate the fleets as they sail the course.

1000H: Race Week News interviews in this morning's paper quotes several skippers that tactics have been critical in the races so far this week.

0941H: You folks tracking the Melges 24 fleet need to know that we have 2 boats named Zig Zag on the course, though one is Zig Zag 18. Zig Zag is USA 625 on the printed scratch sheet and is owned by Marty Jensen. Zig Zag 18 is owned by Henri Samuel. I'll try to keep them straight for you when reporting roundings.

0936H: We have a rising tide this morning, until around noon.

0933H: Ran into Skip Dieball in the tent. He's the US Sailing 2009 Champion of Champions. He's not out here racing, but is coaching the J/105 team on Lucky Dog. Whenever you talk to the coaches in the tent, with all that partying going on, you get to the topic of the series aspect of KWRW and the need to keep the crew focused on the racing as well as the partying.

0931H: It's pretty lumpy now that we are out to the racing area. Early reports of wind direction have come in...155...but no reported velocity at this time. I'd say it's a steady 13-16 right now. The weatherman says it will ease as the day progresses.

A noisy crowd in the tent last night...having a good time. Mount Gay had a prize drawing for those who signed up...17 nice items. There was no retail sales of Mount Gay items this year, but SLAM has everything anyone might need or want.

Just got a wind reading of 162 and 13 knots

0908H: Good morning. As we head out to the race course we are noting that it is quite a bit warmer today and humid. The good news is that the wind is blowing in the 15 knot range...that should make some of our racers happy! Once again our plan is to have 2 races today.

The Silver Shadow cruise ship is tied up, with its passengers watching the parade of boats heading out. Another cruise ship is coming in, and our sailors have been told to avoid it.

You won't find any Mount Gay hats there, though...those are reserved for participants in the regatta.

He grew up sailing out of North Cape Yacht Club in Michigan, then went on to the University of Rhode Island sailing team, and is now an alum working in the sailing industry. He's aboard Rascal, leading the J/80 fleet as of today. It's great to see the people you knew as junior sailors continuing to participate.
