Day Five January 23, 2009

1450H: That's a wrap for Acura Key West Race Week 2009. It's been an absolutely great week and we all really enjoyed ourselves here on the Div 1Signal Boat. The competition was superb and today's races determined the final standings for the week. The fat lady has sung. Hope to see you all again next year.

1449H: Farr 30 finishes - Mummbles, Jack-A-Roe, Mummy Syndicate, Rhumb Punch and Kinetic

1434H: Swan 42 finishes - Tiburon, Long Echo, Apparition, Celeritas, Vitesse, Arethusa, IRC 2 finishes - uncorrected - First Light, Cool Breeze, BNgoni, Soozal, Act One, Gold Digger, Ciao, Teamwork, Hot Ticket, Santa Cruz One, Solnes, Tiburon, and Hurrycane.

1426H: Farr 40 finishes - Mascalzone Latino, Flash Gordon, Joe Fly, Barking Mad, Nanoq, Convexity, Goombay Smash, Plenty, Groovederci, Mangusta Risk, Oz and Spaceman Spiff.

1411H: BM tacked on the port layline into the starboard end of the finish line. Ml wins, the battle is now for 2nd

1403H: Synergy, the Russian boat, came by and thanked the Race Committee and said they will be back next year for sure.

1358H: Rio finished 9 min and 3 sec behind Rosebud

1356H: Looks like Rosebud crushed this race - no other IRC 1 finishes yet

Check out the new photos I loaded on Susan's Flickr account

1354H: Rosebud has finished and they may have saved their time over the rest of the IRC 1 boats.

1350H: M-L was first round the gate, Joe Fly was second, Convexity third and Barking Mad was fourth.

1344H: We have set up the finish line - Signal Boat is at 24 32.087 N / 81 49.925 W

1335H: ML is the first boat to gybe about 1/4 way to the gate.

1334H: Rounding - First - M-L, Joe Fly is 17 sec behind M-L, Convexity is 30 sec behind M-L, Barking Mad is 45 sec behind M-L. ; All Farr 40s continue down the leg on starboard gybe - very pretty sight - they are all lined up - a parade of spinnakers.

1330H: We are now at WM2 . M-L is now on the port layline

M-L is still leading. Looks like the order will be M-L, JF, BM, but Convexity may give BM some trouble.

1327H: Joe FLy and M-L are in the upper left side and BM is in the upper right side about 3/4 nm from Wm2

Definitely a big split.

1325H: Convexity is now 4th place.

This is about the halfway point in the race.

1324H: M-L is kicking everyone's butt right now

1323H: Barking is another 2 boatlengths behind Joe Fly - all boats on starboard.

1322H: Halfway up the beat is looks like Mascalzone may be leading. Joe Fly just tacked on a puff and will cross in front of Barking Mad - but they just tacked under Joe Fly. Joe Fly is now clearly behind M-L by about 3 boat lengths. Joe Fly and Barking Mad are fighting for second to WM2 for the second windward leg.

1319H: We are following the Farr 40s up the beat. The boats on port tack in order are Joe Fly, Barking Mad and the Crown Prince. Can't see far enough over to the starboard tack boats.

Nanoq just tacked over to starboard after getting pinched by Barking Mad

1315H: Misty, the judges boat is out here with quite a crowd on their flybridge.

Div 1 signal boat is now heading up to the top of the course to set up a windward finish. Will be very interesting to watch the last beat.

1313H: And Spaceman Spiff and Oz bring up the rear. very exciting rounding and could bode a shuffle in standings.

1312H: Mangusta Risk is flying a B flag and so does Plenty.

1311H: Nanoq just gybed to cover Mangusta Risk and looks like they are 5th around the gate.

1310H: Joe Fly just made a defensive gybe to cover Barking Mad just before the gate. It looks like M-L may have caught up to 3 rd place at the gate

1302H: Joe Fly rounds WM2 first, Barking Mad, and Mascalzone is 5th - all Farr 40s rounded in less than a minutes. The fat lady hasn't sung yet.

Rio, Ran just rounded the gate.

Tiburon is the first Swan 42 around WM2

1139H: (SB) Rosebud just finished Race 9. No surprise that they crossed the line first again for the 9th time this week!!!!!

1121H: (SB) Many of the spectator boats are in a bad place with the potential to foul competitors. Several spectator boats have been parking right in the path that boats would take if they tacked over to port right after the start.

Farr 40 gate rounding - Joe Fly was first followed by Convexity.

1115H: (SB) We are also finding out that Interlude was involved in the incident blocking Gold Digger also.

1101H: (SB) IRC 2 start - Gold Digger was fouled by spectator Relentless. Gold Digger crossed 1 minute and 55 seconds late because of the boat. The RC has recorded this time. The boat was right on the starboard stern of the Signal Boat and extended into the starting area.

IRC 2 was all clear. The Farr 30 class is all clear.

The Signal Boat RC is speculating that Gold Digger will ask for redress for being blocked by motor boat.

Rosebud is now at the gate 1106.

1054H: (SB) Rosebud rounded WM1 at 1053

1049H: (SB) All clear on Farr 40 start. The Crown Prince got a very good start right at the Signal Boat - then tacked over to port. then back and crossed ahead of other boats that tacked over. Looks like he is in a good position.

Lots of spectator boats out here crowded around the Signal Boat.

3 boats OCS on the Swan 42 start - Long Echo, Celeritas, Tiburon. They are now all clear.

1040H: (SW) We added an additional 5 minutes between IRC 1 and the Farr 40 starts for fleet/course management purposes.

0935H: (SB) More info on Drum - the maxi-yacht Drum capsized after her experimental keel sheared off. Pop star Simon Le Bon, co-owner and crew member of Drum, was trapped under the hull with five other crew members for twenty minutes, until being rescued by the Royal Navy.

0935H: (SB) Simon Le Bon had the boat named Drum. They lost their keel in the 1985 Fastnet Race and capsized.

0932H: (SB) So Race Fans and Rock Fans, we have Simon LeBon , the lead singer for Duran Duran crewing on the IRC 1 boat Rio today. Rio has been doing pretty well this week and is currently in 4th place with the same points (24) as the third place boat Anema and Core.

(SW) Breeze building to 12 - 14 kts-   direction 045 mag

0913H: (SW) Day 5--  Div 1 Signal is proceeding to the race course.   Clear skies, sunny with a nice 10 knot breeze from the North East.  Sea state calm.

0910H: (SB) We could not have ordered better weather for the last day of Acura KWRW 2009. It is gorgeous here today. The Signal Boat has left the harbor and is heading to the course area for today. We had some moderate chop with about 10 kts of breeze - a little less shifty than yesterday. The sun is shining and warm.

Day Four January 22, 2009

1451H: Convexity was 3rd in Farr 40, then Plenty, Groovederci, Joe Fly, There are quite a few protests so these standings may change.

1432H: Goombay Smash has a huge lead in the Farr 40 class and took first in this race. M-L is second

1424H:IRC 1 finish order for first 3 - not corrected time is Rosebud, Ran, Rio.

1405H: Speculation is that Convexity and Mangusta Risk fouled Joe Fly and Joe Fly is protesting them both. But it looked like Convexity was forced to break a rule by Mangusta Risk. Should be a complicated hearing.

1402H: Joe Fly made up a lot of time banging the right side.

1358H: We're hoping that he doesn't come over and hug the Signal Boat again! Mascalzone is second at WM2, Convexity let Mangusta Risk in at the mark, Joe Fly was right behind them. They all have protest flags up.

Nanoq has a B flag, Oz is right in front of the last boat - Spaceman Spiff.

1356H: Joe Fly is banging right on the second beat

Goombay is first with a big lead at WM2 for the second leg

1344H: Long Echo is now leading in the Swan 42 class.

1342H: We are heading to the top of the course to set up a windward finish.

1340H: Goombay Smash is first at the gate

Second round the gate is a tie (separate gate marks) Mascalzone Latino and Convexity. Barking Mad next, then Nanoq. Joe Fly and Plently split in a tie for the tail end

1333H: It looks like Joe Fly rounded WM2 in last place last in the Farr 40 class

1330H:  Celeritas is in the lead - Swan 42s. Anema and Core is having a big problem getting their jib back up after rounding the gate.

1323H: Comments from PRO - we have a symmetrical but shifty course. The first Farr 40 to round WM2 is Joe Fly. Rosebud will be at the gate in about 1 minute.

1113H: Swan 42 start - Tiburon was OCS then cleared.

Rosebud has rounded WM1 at 1311 hours.

1300H: Race 8 IRC 1 all clear

1252H: New position for the Signal Boat 24 29.356 N / 81.49.784 W. The course bearing is 360,

We were not able to get any photos of the Farr 40 pile up at the finish - our crew had to hit the deck again to avoid getting dragged or decapitated by Flash Gordon's spin sheet.

1241H: The Farr 40s all finished within a minute.

1239H: Race 7 finishes IRC (uncorrected) Rosebud, Ran, Rio, Anema and Core; Farr 40 Nanoq, Barking Mad, Mascalzone Latino, Joe Fly; Swan 42 Tiburon, Long Echo, Arethusa; IRC2 First Light, Cool Breeze, Ngoni, Farr 30 - jack-A-Roe, Kinetic, Rhumb Punch

We are re-anchoring the Signal Boat in a new location due to the wind shift.

1221H: (SB) Complaints from Barking Mad about the helicopter being too low and sucking up all the air from the competitors.

1217H: (SB) Ok, a little break here- Flash Gordon's spinnaker sheet got wrapped around the pole holding the R flag on the port bow of the Signal Boat. It snapped the pole off the ties on the bow pulpit. Then Flash spun out of control right on the finish line and fouled a few boats. A big pile up right on the line.

1206H: (SB) Very exciting finish in the Farr 40 fleet. The Prince is still in the lead. Followed by Joe Fly

WOWWWW! What a mess at the Farr 40 finish. Den 7 was first cleanly and then all hell broke loose. Lots of protests right at the finish line. More to come

1159H: (SB) First Light is the first IRC 2 boat around WM2 on the second leg.

1153H: (SB) Rio crossed 3rd and the Nautica boat, Anema and Core crossed 4th. Tiburon was the first Swan 42 around WM2

1150H: (SB) Nanoq is the first Farr 40 around WM2 on the second leg. Nice job.

The rest of the IRC 1 class is coming to the finish. Looks like Ran passed Rio and will be second over the line. Farr 30 s are rounding the gate.

1138H: (SB) All Swan 42s have rounded the gate.

1134H: (SB) And the windward marks - Class A is having to go through traffic to get passed the power boats hanging around WM2

1131H: (SB) We are getting some complaints called in about the helicopter on the race course - not sure what can be done about it

Nanoq rounded 2S ahead of Joe Fly. HRH took the lead over Joe Fly.

1129H: (SB) Cool Breeze is the first IRC 2 boat around the WM2

1036H: (SB) WM1 is set at 030 with a distance of 2.1, WM2 is 030 with a distance of 1.8. Course is #4 for all classes. We will add 5 minutes into the sequence after the IRC1 start.

1034H: (SB) Our new position is 24 29.712 N/ 81 51.037 W. 2P is in the water and setting 2S for 030.

1030H: (SB) Wind speed is down to about 8 kts and wind still shifting. We will signal an AP at 1030. AP raised and 2 horns. We anticipate going into sequence at 1045.

1022H: (SB) We are setting the anchor and are considering a postponement - wind shifts of about 50 degrees left and right. Probably due to the cold air and clouds aloft.

Wind is 030 to 035 - big leftie from the earlier 070

Top of the course is seeing 015

1015H: (SB) Wind has been shifting left and we need to move the Signal Boat 1/4 mile southeast and re-set to avoid a shallow area that would be near the top of the course.

0952H: (SB) The Signal Boat is on station at 24 30.479 N / 81 51.575 W. The wind direction is about 070 and wind speed is about 10 kts. with waves less than 2 ft. Beautiful sunshine and a little bit cool (but certainly better than New England)

0919H: (SB) We have reached the general area where we are planning to set the starting line. Waiting for things to settle down before dropping the hook. Competitors are starting to arrive.

0854H: (SB) Good Morning Everyone, This is the Div 1 Signal Boat. We have just left the harbor and heading out to the course area. It is an absolutely gorgeous day. A little bit cool temperature-wise, but the sun is brilliant and warm. The seas are pretty flat and wind is about 10-12 kts. A perfect day to go sailboat racing.

Day Three January 21, 2009

1400H: (SB) USA 41 is the first Farr 30 around WM2, Rosebud is making her final tack to the finish, she just shot the line and finished.

Joe Fly, Barking Mad and Convexity

1330H: Rosebud just rounded the top mark

1319H: (SB) Barking Mad is second around the gate, followed by Convexity and then HRH

Goombay Smash (up) in the middle of the pack around the gate. Mascalzone is pretty much DFL at the gate.

We are now heading to the top of the course to set up for a windward finish. Mascalzone did not have a good gate rounding - their chute was still up and jib was dragging.

I bet M-L is moaning about this race - OCS at start, bad gate rounding, yuck

1315H: (SB) Last night in the tent I saw several of the crew from Anema and Core. These guys had muscles on top of muscles - biceps like I've never seen before.

Farr 40s coming to the gate. Joe Fly is first round the gate.

(SW) Souzal at the top mark is in front of the IRC2 Fleet

1311H: (SW) RC 1 at the first Gate:  Rosebud: 1308  Anema and Core:  1310   Ran:  1310:17   Rio: 1310:20  IRC1     Synergy  1311

1251H: (SB) RC 2 start - Ngoni OCS all others right on the line

All clear in IRC 2, (SW) Note on IRC1: They approaching the top mark----   cannot tell from here-   will be back as soon as we hear from the WM1 boat

1246H: Swan 42's had a great start with the entire fleet on the line.

1242H: (SB) Two Farrs OCS at start - Groovederci and Mascalzone Latino -- they have cleared. (SW) Joe Fly Farr 40 took the Signal boat end start.

1237H: (SW) IRC 1 off the line all clear-  Rosebud closest to the Signal Boat.

The entire IRC 1 Fleet is headed left--  no one heading right.

After 2 minutes now starting to see some of the fleet tack to port.

1234H: Div 1 Posting Course 5 (Windward Finish)  025 Bearing with WM1 @ 2.5nm and WM2 at 2.0nm.  IRC 1 to start in 90 seconds

Windspeed 14 - 18-  Cloudy with many breaks for some nice sunshine.

1225H: (SW) Setting up for the second race of the day--   Conditions steady--   relatively light sea state.

1206H: Looks like no serious damage to Signal Boat. Goombay Smash hit the anchor line first which took some of the impact. The main trimmer on Goombay yelled to our foredeck crew to hit the deck and they all did to avoid being hit by the boom. They also came back and refinished and apologized

1154H: (SB) Goombay Smash just hit the Signal Boat at the bow and then again at the starboard quarter after gybing. They have a big scratch down their side. No serious damage to the Signal Boat as far as we can see right now - checking out below waterline.

1151H: (SB) Rosebud has finished Race 5 at 11:32:41

Goombay Smash has passed Barking Mad at the 2nd weather mark followed by Joe Fly

Ran got pushed out past the layline at the gate and cleared the bow of the Signal Boat by 10 ft. Rio was right behind and just as close.

1128H: (SB) Ran is second around WM1, IRC 2 is rounding the gate

1124H: (SB) Rosebud rounded the W1 at 1121 and on the way to the finish

1118H: (SW) Followed by Joe Fly, Plenty, Flash Gordo, Groovederci, Masc. L,  Tur 1

Sun is coming out--   brilliant conditions--

1114H: (SB) Long Echo is flying a protest flag. Celeritas did a penalty turns - 2 tacks and 2 gybes so they must have fouled within the 3 boat length circle. Not sure if this is related to the flag on Long Echo. (SW) Farr 40's at the gate-  Barking Mad,  Goombay Smash first

1105H: (SB) Hurrycane has retired from Race 5 to bring an injured crew member in. They report that they will be back for Race 6

1101H: (SW) Barking Mad first Farr 40 to WM2. No change of course for the fleets--   wind holding steady enough to keep the track the same.

1053H: (SW) IRC 2 off the line all clear.  Most fleets favoring the left side for the first half of the first weather leg. Rosebud just rounded the WM1 @ 1053. 18 Minute leg (2.3nm)

1046H: (SW) Swan 42's are on the track now.  All clear start for them as well.

1041H: Farr 40's on the course-  al clear at the start.

1036H: (SW) IRC 1 off clean with a beautiful set up of all the boats right on the line bows out Sun breaking through giving us the bright green water KW is famous for.

1015H: (SW) Setting the course square to 035 mag.  WM1 2.3 nm / WM2 2.0 nm.

1007H: (SW) 25 minutes to the warning signal.  Looking at a 2.5 nm leg for IRC 1 is the wind holds above 17--  otherwise a 2.3nm leg.  All other classes a 2.0nm leg.

0936H: (SW) Starting to check boats in as they make their way downwind from KW to the starting area

0930H: The competitors are beginning to arrive. Seas are bouncing around 3-4 ft. We've been seeing wind direction swinging between 035 and 050

0925H: (SB) The Div 1 Signal Boat is on station at 24 29.619 N / 81 51.043 W. Wind is about 19-21 kts. Haven't settled in enough to give direction

0846H: (SB) Good Morning Race Fans - Susan here on the Div 1 Signal Boat heading out to the course area. It's a bit on the cool side today, but the winds are perfect. Most of our crew is bundled up with fleece, foulies and earmuffs, but inside at my computer it's nice and toasty. Looks like we will have an overcast day until this front moves through.

Day Two January 20, 2009

1444H: Farr 30 finishes 1-3 Kinetic, Jack-A-Roe, Rhumb Punch. several protests in this fleet. First over the line for the IRC2 is Cool Breeze, followed by Ngoni, then Golddigger - protests in this fleet also.

1348H: Unofficial results for IRC 1 in Race 3 - Rosebud took first by 7 seconds corrected over Ran, then Rio, Anema and Core, Synergy, Sjambok,, Yeoman and Pace. Not sure what will happen with protests - that may change things.

1342H: No surprise - Rosebud finishes first again in Race 4.

1330H: (SB) Rosebud is near the gate and will be heading back up to the finish. We will be setting up our line very soon.

The Div 1 Signal Boat is at the new finish line. Our position is 24 31.914N / 81 50.665W

1320H: (SB) Looks like Mascalzone Latino has overtaken Barking Mad by a small lead. There was a knock right at the mark that favored the Italian boat.

Rosebud is near the gate and will be heading back up to the finish. We will be setting up our line very soon.

1312H: (SB) new course bearing is 330 with windward leg distance 2.5 for IRC 1 and 2.0 for the other classes.

1308H: Sjambok is the last IRC to round the gate. She did 2 penalty turns right after the start so she must have fouled someone right at the start.

1303H: Rosebud has rounded. Then Ran and then Rio.

No it is not Rio in third - it's Anema and Core. Barking Mad is first at the gate for Farr 40.

Mascalzone Latino is 2nd around gate - then Mangusta Risk.

Farr 40s are splitting tacks going back up but then the port tack boats have tacked right back. Joe Fly just did a penalty turn.

Wind is up to 20.4 kts. nad seas about 3 ft.

Since Rosebud is faster than us, we are heading to set up the finish line up wind.

1252H: (SB) Div 1 Signal Boat is hoisting the anchor. We will hang down here until the gate roundings and then head up to the top of the course to set up a windward finish for Race 4. Rosebud is about 2 minutes from the gate.

1242H: (SB) We are shortening the weather leg for IRC 1 only ~ .2 mile.

Mummbles is OCS at the start of Farr 30.

1237H: (SB) Hurrycane, Act One, and Ngoni were OCS at the start of IRC 2.

IRC 2 class is now all clear.

1235H: (SB) Several protests called in and flags seen for Race 3 so final results will not be available until after protest hearings.

1228H: (SB)  Farr 40 start - all clear. Oz got a great start at the starboard end of the line. DEN 7 was at the extreme port end. Boats have now split tacks.

1223H: (SB) We have sent the scores for Race 3 into the Scoring Office. In sequence now for Race 4. (editor note: the lag time to posting results to web is due to the teams efforts to cross check and possible protests, etc. we will not post unless we know it will be correct on first go.)

IRC 1 is all clear at the start.

1152H: (SB) Farr 40 DEN 7 is flying a protest flag.
